Taking you behind the scenes of a photoshoot that was nearly derailed by mother nature. Not everyone loves early mornings, but I think there’s something truly beautiful about a sunrise photoshoot. I recently had the opportunity to work with the sweetest family, and despite some initial weather challenges, the session turned into an unforgettable experience. The early morning light, with its gentle hues and the world slowly coming to life, provided us with the most serene backdrop that perfectly paired with this family’s joy and love for each other. Despite navigating unexpected weather, we were rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise that highlighted their connection and created unforgettable moments.
What You Don’t See
While the behind the scenes of a photoshoot usually show all the fun and adventure we have, what you don’t always see are the little bumps we hit along the way as we work hard to make sure everything runs smoothly. In fact, thanks to the weather we had on the morning of our scheduled shoot, this session almost didn’t happen!
That morning, we woke up to pouring rain and wind. It was 5:43 a.m., and I was driving from my hotel to the location, just praying the clouds would part for us. I arrived early, sitting in my car and watching the clock tick closer to sunrise, low-key obsessively staring at the sky, willing the rain to stop. Every minute felt like an eternity as I silently hoped for a miracle.
Then I got a call from my client, and my heart sank. “I don’t think my kids are going to handle this weather very well. Maybe we should cancel,” she said, and I could hear the concern in her voice. At that moment, all I could think about was how much work had gone into planning this shoot. Thankfully, just as I was about to suggest rescheduling, I noticed a break in the clouds. I reassured her and promised that even if we only captured a few good images, it would be worth it. Trusting my instinct, they showed up, and as if on cue, the sky cleared up, leaving us with the most magical sunrise shoot on the coast of Oahu, Hawaii.
